![]() There are versions of Popcorn Time for all popular computer operating systems, and there is a new one for Android. We have to figure being able to stream the film at home for free may reduce the box office take on the next X-Men film. That film is currently available on Popcorn Time. News Corp’s 20 Century Fox (now 21 Century) made a fortune at the box office last weekend on the release of the new X-Men film. In other words, Popcorn Time looks like Netflix, is free, and allows streaming of blockbuster films still in their theatrical release. Popcorn Time has a user interface very similar to Netflix, but instead of connecting users to paid content, it connects them to free torrents. This program was released in late 2012 just after we published TV is Next. It also is enabling cord cutters to eliminate their cable subscription which is a negative for broadcasters’ revenue. Netflix is pulling viewers away from the most profitable live viewing in exchange for a lower revenue model. Please note that this isn’t necessarily a big plus for the TV networks. It is reasonable to assume close to 100% of Bit Torrent traffic is pirated content.) Netflix has taken much of this share from Bit Torrent because once you log on to Netflix, you just click on the title you want to watch. (Bit Torrent accounts for 15% of internet traffic in Europe and 27% in Asia. In the US, Bit Torrent usage has fallen from 31% to 8.3%. This is one of the reasons Netflix supplanted Bit Torrent as the biggest bandwidth user on the web. It’s not complicated, but for people not familiar with the process, it meant committing to a little time searching for the programs and settings you wanted. The process involved downloading and configuring a Bit Torrent client, finding a good source of torrents, downloading those torrents, and then watching from your computer.
